At this session, we will review areas of potential interest and co-construct a plan for next semester. Your input will help us make this relevant and meaningful. I look forward to seeing you then!

Over the next few months, we will hold book discussions on Chip's book, taking a section of the book and discussing insights, action steps and reflections on his topics. If you don't have the book (and we recommend you do!) or haven't had time to read it yet, don't worry. Reading the book will give you more context and insight, but the discussions will benefit all and your perspective is welcome!!

The discussions will be held over Zoom from 7:00 to 8:00 Central time on the first Wednesday of the month - April 3 (covering the Introduction and Chapters 1-4); May 1 (covering Chapters 5-8) and June 5 (covering Chapters 9-12 and the Afterword).

And if you miss a session, don't hesitate to jump in to any sessions you can.

Marci Alboher, a VP at Co-Generate and MEA Faculty member, will guide us through an energizing, interactive discussion on (Re)Balancing Our Many Identities. Marci, who popularized the idea of the “slash career”, will spur you to think about your current “slashes”  (e.g. parent, caregiver, entrepreneur, business colleague, retiree) and guide you through some interactive activities to help you prioritize and bring these aspects of life and work into harmony, rather than conflict with each other.

We are grateful to Inspir for generously hosting this event in their beautiful rooftop SKYPARK.  Join us for good food, better cocktails and exceptional content as we mix and mingle with the wise and curious community of Metro NY Compadres.  This will be a Plus 1 event, so invite an MEA-curious guest! Please join us for our FIRST in person event for the Midwest MEA Alumni Chapter in Chicago on Saturday, May 11th from 4:00pm - 5:30pm.

Barbara Kreisman and Scott McLagan will be joining us to share their experience in the inaugural cohort of University of Chicago's Leadership and Society Initiative. You may recognize Barbara, who wrote several guest posts for Chip's Wisdom Well, and is a fellow MEA alum. Together, Scott and Barb assisted with the design and delivery of the on-line MEA “Reframing Retirement” program offered last fall.  They are both emerita professors at the University of Denver where they are engaged with the Institute for Healthy Aging.

We will also be joined by MEA faculty Shelley Paxton, who will share her experience leading workshops and her leadership in this space.

In addition to time with our wonderful guests, there will be space for meeting and connecting with each other.

You may be aware that Chip and the team have curated an enormous library as part of the Santa Fe campus opening. People have donated from far and wide to create a comprehensive set of titles on many subjects.

In the spirit of this:

- What book would you insist should be in that library?

- What is dear to your heart and why?

- What themes or quotes might summarise the impact that it’s had on you?

For our May online gathering, we ask you to bring along the title of the book (or podcast) you love most in this arena of personal or pro-aging growth. We will split into smaller groups to discuss, then come back together.

This spring, we will do a 2-session Book Study, led by one of our members, Jill Nykoliation! Jill is an MEA Alumni and facilitator, was personally trained by Prof. Brooks, and she has generously offered to lead our study group. Her bio is attached to this note. She will lead us through a 2-part series exploring Harvard Business School Professor Arthur Brooks and Oprah's NY Times best-selling book, "Build the Life you Want".  It is a beautiful compliment to what we learned and practiced at MEA. Whether we are navigating transitions or yearning for a greater sense of purpose, understanding what fuels our happiness is an essential part of life's fulfillment and personal growth. Most people think success is the key to happiness, but they are wrong. Happiness is the key to success. According to research, to enjoy a truly successful life, one should understand happiness and learn to manage it.

We're going to do this Book Study across two sessions: May 22 6:30-7:30 pm, and June 12, 12-1pm.  It will be a short and sweet dive into this popular book. I will send registration instructions and some preparation tasks soon, but for now I just wanted you to know about these two dates. You don't want to miss this!

We are forming a Houston MEA Alumni Group and our initial meeting will be attended by Chip Conley to share the latest news about MEA and talk about his new book, Learning to Love Midlife.

Our gathering will be held in the Gathering Barn at Hope Farms, an urban farm in the shadow of downtown Houston.  A critical component in achieving Recipe for Success Foundation’s mission to mobilize the community to provide healthier diets for children, Hope Farms grows fresh, affordable produce while training and providing small-business incubation and workforce readiness for U.S. Veterans and others, preparing them to be urban agri-preneurs. The seven-acre farm is also a healthy gathering place, offering regular cooking and gardening classes for children and adults, weekly produce deliveries to subscribers, weekly onsite markets, pop-up produce markets in the community and public events that celebrate local food and the power of shared meals to build community.  

Join us for light bites and drink to mix and mingle with the wise and curious community Metro Houston Compadres.   This will be a Plus 1 event, so invite a MEA-curious guest!  

Dress is farm casual; please be sure to wear closed-toed shoes.  It’s a farm.

Our compadre/comadre Dr. Golda Joseph will guide us in conversation with her decades of wisdom as an intuitive expressive arts facilitator, professional counselor, consultant, and trainer in Human Development and Empathic Wisdom.

Kate Knight has offered her recent project, The Dearborn Loft House, in the Central District for our gathering place. The Dearborn Loft House was built in 1978 as one of the first passive houses in the Northwest, and fully remodeled in 2022 as an experiment in regenerative design. As Kate shares “we did the whole renovation with Paul Hawken's Regeneration book in one hand, and Blue Zones in the other.” The Loft House has appeared in Vanity Fair and features 14" raw cedar beams, metalwork by Seattle sculptor George Tsutukawa, poured concrete, and a flood of natural light. If folks are interested, Kate’s also offering a garden tour at her home across the street, “also regen-inspired, inside and out. All imperfect, all tons of fun.”
