APAC September Gathering
Wednesday 18 September 2024
5.00pm AEST (Sydney Time)
Giving Back / Making a Contribution / Being of Service
MEA is in the midst of participation in September of Service encouraging Alumni to participate locally in acts of service to our communities. Given that our APAC alums are spread across a quarter of the globe, doing things as a group can be tricky, so we decided to have a conversation about it.
Is ‘service’ a prerequisite for finding our midlife purpose? If so, how so?
Where does ‘giving back’ fit on the scale between altruism and selfishness?
How do I find opportunities to make a contribution locally? What does it take? Am I ready?
It feels like such a commitment, does just doing Random Acts of Kindness count?
What does Leaving a Legacy mean?
Be curious, come along and join the conversation, it could expand your wisdom, social or professional connections, and possibly also improve your wellbeing.

MEA Seattle Circle on Philanthropy & Service - September 24, 2024
For many, the next chapter in their lives includes an increased focus on service and giving. How are people thinking about their approach and how to make it as meaningful and as impactful as possible?
The conversation will be facilitated by Aaron Hurst. As the founder and long-time CEO of the Taproot Foundation, he was a global pioneer in modern service and philanthropy. He has helped engage tens of thousands of people in service around the world, changed the way companies contribute to the community, and worked with over 100 foundations. He is currently the co-founder and executive chair of Board.Dev, that has a goal to place 30,000 tech executives on boards by 2030.
Where: Aaron's place in Madrona (1413 36th Ave)
When: September 24th, 6-9 pm
Food & Drink: In the spirit of giving, this evening is a potluck. Bring your favorite food or drink that you want to share with the community!
A few reflection questions to consider before the evening:
- Growing up, what was the message about giving?
- What role do philanthropy and service play in your life today and vision for your next chapter?
- What organizations do you support today that others in the group might be inspired to support?
And a societal question to ponder:
- Giving and service are declining in America. Why do you think that is happening?
To RSVP, please click “yes” to the Google calendar invitation from Aaron Hurst, or you may email MEASeattleChapter@gmail.com

We are pleased to offer another opportunity to participate in our Book Club. Our next book is Julia Cameron’s “It’s Never Too Late to Begin Again”. Here is the Amazon link:
This book follows her twelve-week course aimed at defining—and creating—the life you want to have as you redefine and re-create yourself.
This book includes simple tools that will guide and inspire you to make the most of this time in your life:
- Memoir writing offers an opportunity to reflect on and honor past experience. This book guides you through the daunting task of writing an entire memoir, breaking it down into manageable pieces.
- Morning Pages—private, stream-of-consciousness writing done daily—allow you to express wishes, fears, delights, resentments, and joys, which in turn, provide focus and clarity for the day at hand.
- Artist Dates encourage fun and spontaneity.
- Solo Walks quell anxiety and clear the mind.
We are planning to meet on Tuesday, October 8th, 7 pm ET. A zoom link is below:
https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85424548838?pwd=HP3p1VKJPj4G4B3MPH21eIDjWB02Do.1
At a minimum, we ask that you read/engage in the first 4 chapters (engage with more of the book if you’s like!) so that we can discuss our experiences with her exercises.

Nothing in your life’s journey is going to be as difficult as moving into the second half of life. There. I said it. A bold statement, to be sure.
Many of us read this and nod in agreement, frustrated and stuck in one or more of the challenges of midlife. Others might disregard it and say to themselves, “not for me, I’ve got it all figured out…”, then become shocked when they realize they actually don’t.
The truth is that the transition to the second half of life is rarely smooth. The evidence we’re most familiar with is the midlife crisis, where this Messy Middle presents challenges most of us are ill-equipped to navigate. Here are some of the more common bombshells we have to deal with:
Enter A New Approach – PARTS WORK
Designed specifically for people struggling to figure out who they are in midlife or confused on how to find meaning and purpose for the second half of life, here’s what this highly interactive, 90-minute session will cover:
Wed 16 Oct: 'Change is external, transition is internal'
Transition is the inner psychological process that people go through as they internalize and come to terms with the new situation that change brings about. The starting point for dealing with transition is not the outcome, but the endings that people have in leaving the old situation behind.
APAC co-lead Tom is in the 'messy middle' and is keen to hear and share your wisdom on change and transition: the ups, the downs, the in-betweens and surprises.

Here is a rare opportunity to enter San Quentin for a few hours and meet inmates (now called residents) who act Shakespeare. This event is free of charge but tax deductible donations to the Marin Shakespeare Company would be much appreciated to support programming like this. I hope you can join us." - MK
